Court obliges Gazprom remedy consequences of 7-year-old oil spill

MOSCOW, Jun 24 (PRIME) -- The Arbitration Court of the West Siberian District has ordered Gazprom Pererabotka, a unit of Russian gas giant Gazprom, to remediate lands in the Purovsky Region of the Yamal Peninsula that suffered from an oil spill in 2015, the Federal Service for Natural Resources Oversight said in a statement late on Wednesday.

In 2015, the trunk condensate pipeline Urengoi–Surgut had an incident, and some lands around it were contaminated. The service issued an order to remediate the land. In 2019, an unscheduled inspection showed that the company failed to do so properly, and that analysis of soil samples showed a high content of oil products and chlorides.

The service filed a suit in 2019, and said that the Arbitration Court of the West Siberian District acknowledged the order to remediate the land legal.

A Gazprom Pererabotka representative said that the court was yet to publish its ruling, this is why the company had no information about the reasons and grounds that the court used to cancel the decision of a lower court.
